GEOGLOWS

GEOGLOWS is the initiative of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) dedicated to global water sustainability that spearheads advancements in hydrological science, with a team dedicated to the development and implementation of open forecasting systems for water. With a commitment to precision and accessibility, GEOGLOWS delivers accurate hydrological predictions on a global scale, playing a vital role in addressing and mitigating complex challenges in water resource management across diverse geographical regions.

The GEOGLOWS Initiative

The GEO-GloWS initiative was established in 2017 by the GEO Water Community to provide greater coordination among the diverse freshwater activities within GEO. GEOGloWS is working to provide relevant, actionable information about water that promotes the use of earth observations and promotes the strengthening of observational networks. GEOGloWS also promotes the GEO Data Sharing Principles and Data Management.

GEOGloWS is a voluntary mechanism, created by informal agreement among multiple partners from inside and outside the UN system. This allows for engagement and greater integration with trans-national organizations not represented in the UN (e.g., ECMWF) and agencies with water responsibilities that are not hydromet services (e.g., CEMADEN-Brazil).

GEOGloWS has been increasing its engagement with global policy-level organizations to design and implement strategies ensuring the uptake of Earth observation to aid governments in achieving international policy mandates Reaching beyond data availability and accessibility, GEOGloWS develops strategic partnerships among GEO members, participations organizations and external partners, including the non-governmental and commercial sector, for services delivery that ties Earth observation requirements to policy mandates.
